This S²MARTS announcement is intended to survey U.S. companies in the silicon carbide defense supply chain industry through NSTXL’s Innovation Network. The objective is to gather information related to the extent that U.S. companies have developed, or are willing to develop, a set of silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor devices and packages, including modules, operating at <5 kV, with standardized performance and mechanical specifications for defense applications. Ideally, such products would be similar to, or adapted from, existing commercial SiC products with the capability to produce the devices, packages, and modules onshore. The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane), Radar Technologies Division (Code WXP), in tandem with other defense agencies, is interested in pursuing an effort to define a set of standard silicon carbide power semiconductor devices and packages, including multichip modules, that could replace many current custom or semi-custom devices used in the defense industry. By increasing the capabilities, it would allow the volume of a subset of SiC devices and packages for defense applications to reduce the cost of manufacture and purchase price of such products. Reducing the need for SiC device manufacturers to hold inventory of parts for a single customer would be another benefit.
