The MMEC’s technical emphasis strategy is designed to accelerate innovation by enabling systematic, data-driven, feedback for rapid optimization of microelectronic development. Using the input of members, industry, core facility providers, academia, and government, the MMEC™ will provide a central hub for the development of a scalable and resilient microelectronics manufacturing ecosystem. The MMEC™ will provide:

  • Unified infrastructure to exchange information.
  • Scale-up and scale-out pathway and opportunities.
  • Secure backbone for microelectronic development and manufacturing.
  • Systematic assessment of supply chain capabilities and vulnerabilities.
  • Advocacy and policy advancement.

LAB-TO-FAB-TO-
MISSION & MARKET

One of the foundational principles that was originally developed in alignment with Microelectronics Commons goals is the acceleration of “Lab-to-Fab”. Providing long-term solutions to the current microelectronic shortages by unleashing innovation and accelerating the transition from research (lab) to the design and manufacture (fab) of microelectronics. Our goal with “Lab-to-Fab-to-Mission & Market” builds on those principles, but also focuses on expanding the production of state-of-the-art microelectronics – making them available to the warfighter and, where applicable, commercial markets. A secure, robust, and comprehensive digital infrastructure is only possible if advanced microelectronics can transition into available and useful assets for our military and commercial needs. The MMEC, along with our partners in industry, academia, and government, have created an ecosystem that will place the US at the forefront of microelectronics technologies and products.

Workforce Development

To secure a sufficient, intentional, sustainable, reliable, and secure domestic semiconductor ecosystem, efforts must enable a vibrant industry that supports quality jobs, and a skilled workforce. Workforce Development (WFD) Projects funded through the MMEC will create good-paying jobs that benefit American workers and fulfill the needs of our partners to build a successful domestic semiconductor industry. The MMECs WFD goals are guided by a set of best practices and principles that include:

  • Connecting skilled workers to job opportunities
  • Involving community partners including educational institutions, labor unions, community organizations, WFD organizations, and economic development organizations
  • Services to expand opportunities for economically disadvantaged individuals
  • Increase learning and training resources for K-12, community colleges, & universities
  • Prioritize proven earn and learn models like Registered Apprenticeships
  • Lead to stackable, industry-recognized, credentials
  • Train and upskill veterans for advancing employment opportunities
  • Measure and evaluate outcomes with transparent and actionable data
  • Create sustainable systems and partnerships with employees and workers
  • Connect workforce development to economic development
  • Coordinate across and with the Federal government
  • Encourage both government and private funding
